Due diligence for trusts

Stronger trust-wide oversight starts with seeing the whole picture

Managing health and safety across a MAT means looking beyond individual schools. Multiple sites, complex estates and different local arrangements can make it difficult to see where risks sit and whether standards are consistent.

Our specialist MAT support combines independent assurance with practical education-sector expertise. From trust-wide H&S and Fire Safety Audits to Due Diligence Audits before acquiring a new school, we help leaders understand risk, prioritise action and make better-informed decisions.

Frequently asked questions about MAT due dilligence

Governance in schools is the system of oversight, accountability and strategic decision-making that helps a school operate effectively. Governors work with school leaders to set strategic direction, monitor performance, oversee finances and resources, manage risk and ensure the school meets its responsibilities.

Good governance in schools means having clear roles, effective challenge, informed decision-making and strong accountability. It enables governors to provide appropriate strategic oversight, support school improvement and ensure leaders are held to account for the school's performance and resources.

A school governor provides strategic oversight rather than managing the school day to day. Governors work collectively with school leaders to set the school's direction, monitor performance, oversee finances and resources, manage risk and provide appropriate challenge. They also help ensure the school meets its statutory and regulatory responsibilities and remains focused on improving outcomes for pupils.

A school clerk, increasingly known as a Governance Professional, supports the effective running of governing body meetings. They prepare agendas and papers, record accurate minutes, maintain governance records and provide procedural guidance, helping governors make informed decisions and ensuring meetings follow appropriate processes.

A clerk traditionally refers to the person providing administrative and procedural support to a governing body. The term Governance Professional reflects the broader expertise now expected of the role, including governance advice, procedural guidance and support for effective decision-making. The role can therefore extend beyond meeting administration.

Professional clerking services give governing bodies access to experienced expertise that supports effective meetings, accurate records and sound governance processes. A Governance Professional can also provide practical advice, helping governors navigate complex issues and stay focused on strategic oversight rather than administrative tasks.
