Online Safety including Filtering and Monitoring

With the 2023 Keeping Children Safe in Education updates focusing on extended guidance for filtering and monitoring, it’s safe to say Online Safety is a big priority for safeguarding.

However, 38% of schools have no staff training in place and 48% have no Governor training in place, according to the Schools in England Online Safety Policy and Practice report for 2022.

The report indicated schools with inadequate staff training consistently underperform in various online safety measures. Additionally, it emphasised how filtering practices cannot be considered entirely foolproof. 

With this in mind, we’ll talk you through our best practice tips for policies, procedures and training staff, students and parents in Online Safety essentials.

Joanne Bocko 

Joanne has a wide range of safeguarding experience which allows her to understand the differences between schools and the challenges they face. Starting as a primary school teacher, her compassion for those in need led to a move to Police Staff and eventually working in the cybercrime team supporting schools and students with online safety issues. She headed up campaigns for online offences and appeared on the BBC and Radio One newsbeat. Her passion for schools brought her to the Local Authority, where, as a Safeguarding in Education Officer, she provided training and support to all schools in her county. Her motto is ‘if it will make life easier and better for schools, I will do it!’
