Health & Safety

From Risk to Readiness – Strategic Health & Safety for SEND Inclusion

About this event

With over 1.7 million pupils in England now identified as having SEND and the figure continuing to rise, schools face more complex safety and inclusion challenges than ever. When routine health & safety procedures neglect the unique needs of these pupils, the risk of absence, accident or exclusion increases dramatically. This session explores how thoughtful risk assessment and inclusive planning help create environments where every child thrives and learns safely.

During the session we will be looking at:

    • Preparation & Planning - Ensuring the physical environment is fit for individual needs. Providing relevant staff training (manual handling, de-escalation, medical) and adapting activities to be inclusive and safe.
    • Day-to-day Considerations - Effective supervision and responsive staff awareness and conducting dynamic risk assessments throughout the day. Embedding safety measures into behaviour and support plans.
    • Emergency Planning and Response - Developing and reviewing PEEPs (Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans), incorporating emergency actions into individual students plans and using pictorials, social stories and clear messaging to communicate safety to pupils with SEND.
