Briefing Overview

The course introduces the key principles of DPIAs, focusing on: 

• What a DPIA is and why it matters. 

• When a DPIA must be carried out, and when it is considered best practice. 

• The step-by-step stages of a DPIA, including identifying risks, assessing impact, and documenting mitigations. 

• How to approach high-risk processing activities common in schools (e.g. use of new systems, CCTV, third-party tools). 

• Practical examples to show how risks can be reduced and managed without blocking innovation. 

Why This Matters

DPIAs are an essential part of accountability under the UK GDPR. Conducting them properly ensures that schools consider privacy risks at the earliest stage, protecting pupils, staff, and other individuals. Failure to complete a DPIA where required can expose schools to compliance failures, reputational harm, and potential enforcement action.
