Live at 3:45 - Speaking Up for Safety: Professional Challenge and Escalation

This session aims to equip Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) with the knowledge, confidence and practical tools to use professional escalation effectively when working with safeguarding partners, particularly children’s social care. Grounded in Working Together to Safeguard Children 2026, it will explore when escalation is necessary, how to navigate professional disagreement constructively, and how to overcome common barriers such as fear of damaging relationships. Participants will gain a clear understanding of escalation processes, their responsibility to pursue concerns, and how professional challenge strengthens multi-agency working to improve outcomes for children.

By the end of the session, participants will have:

  • Increased confidence in recognising when and how to escalate safeguarding concerns effectively
  • A clear understanding of their role in professional challenge and multi-agency accountability
  • Practical strategies to overcome barriers and maintain positive working relationships while escalating concerns
