Safeguarding

Sexual Harassment in Schools Two Years on from Everyone's Invited

About this event

In 2020 Everyone’s Invited launched, exposing sexual harassment in education. After more than 50,000 accounts of sexual violence were submitted to the website, Ofsted published a report in June 2021 reviewing sexual abuse in schools and colleges.

The results were shocking! Key findings included how harmful sexual behaviours were highly prevalent in schools (92% of girls and 74% of boys witnessed sexist name-calling ‘a lot’).

Furthermore, they found SLT and teachers underestimated the scale of the problem, insufficient reporting and monitoring by staff and a lack of training for Governors.

Following the result, Ofsted updated its Education Inspection Handbook as well as KCSIE guidance. However, two years on, how have schools and Trusts started tackling the problem and what more can be done to build a culture of vigilance?

During the session we will be covering the following:

  • Reviewing what has shaped guidance since March 2021 and the lessons learned
  • Part Five of Keeping Children Safe in Education and what this means for schools practically
  • Considering next steps to further strengthen your response to incidents of sexual harassment and violence
  • How to build and maintain a culture of vigilance within schools
